A small fire burned in the backyard, contained, the flames both warming our gloved hands and charring the children's marshmallows. Strands of lighted bulbs interrupted the darkness, and laughter escaped on clouds of frosty breath. 

We stood watching in winter parkas with hoods that shielded against the biting cold, ready to tie an undone lace or help assemble a s'more, while friends watched from the other side of the window panes, mingling over pineapple punch and petit fours.
